Agency Model Elements

Agency model elements are the atomic components of an agency model.

There are several kinds of agency model elements. In addition, agency model elements are connected via multiple kinds of relationships, so that they can convey the complexity of the associated agency model.

Details

There are several kinds of agency model elements, which are described in the following sections.

Responses

Responses represent answers to questions in the associated question set. A response contains one or more response parts, one for each combination of applicable speaker, agent and entity scopes as dictated by the associated question.

For example, the question "What is the main tone for each speaker?", could have a response containing the following parts:

  • Speaker Alice: "Experiential"
  • Speaker Bob: "Equidistant; Scientific"

The response is composed of two parts, one for each subject speaker.

Response parts

Response parts are each of the individual answers that you produce for a given question and a particular scope.

For unscoped questions, there is only one response part per response. But scoped questions may have many parts, one for each scope combination. For example, a question like "What does each agent possess that others lack, according to each speaker?" must be answered for each subject speaker and object agent. In an agency model containing two speakers and referring to three agents, a response to this question would contain six response parts.

There are different kinds of response parts:

  • Text, which are responded by entering a piece of free text.
  • Itemised, which are responded by entering one or more brief text items.
  • Option List, which are responded by selecting one or more items from a pre-defined option list.
  • Agent, which are responded by selecting one or more agents from the embedded context.

The kind of response part to use in a particular response is given by the associated question.

Entities

Entities represent things mentioned in the discourse that have analytical relevance.

Some questions may ask about central entities, for example. Other questions may be scoped to entities of a particular kind, such as places or historical periods.

Every entity belongs to a particular entity list as dictated by the associated question set.
