Semantic Collocation Analytics (Ontology)

Semantic Collocation analytics shows what concepts appear close to what other concepts in the ontology text content.

This is useful to find out major associations between concepts.

Parameters

  • Max distance. This is the maximum number of words between concept occurrences that will be used to determine collocated concepts. Typical values are around 5.
  • Cross over sentence boundaries. If you check this box, the search for collocated concepts will cross over sentence boundaries. This will result in more results, but probably less significant, as they will include concept pairs that span two or more sentences.

Results

Results are given as a cross-table chart showing all collocations, plus some overall data and an additional chart showing collocations for a selected concept.

All

The cross-table chart shows concepts along both axes. Blue cells show the collocation value for each concept pair. The value for each cell may correspond to the number of occurrences of the collocated concept pair, or to the minimum, average or maximum distance of the collocated concept pair, depending on the sorting selection in the toolbar.

You can select how collocated concepts are sorted from the drop down menu in the toolbar.

Selected

This allows you to select a focus concept to display some overall data and a chart for collocated concepts.

The following data are shown:

  • Focus concept occurrence count. This is the number of times that the focus concept occurs in the text.
  • Collocation count. This is the number of concept occurrences that were found within the maximum distance of focus concept occurrences.

The chart shows the collocated concepts along the vertical axis. The horizontal axis shows the distance of each collocated concept to the focus concept. Blue bars show distance ranges, from minimum to maximum distance. Red circles show average distances, and their size is proportional to the number of occurrences of the collocated concept.

You can select how collocated concepts are sorted from the drop down menu in the toolbar.

Details

Occurrences of concepts are found in the text via denotations. The analytics looks for denotations of each concept, and then searches for collocated concepts within the maximum distance from it, and presents them as results.
