Ontology
An ontology is a dataset containing a conceptual representation of the things that a text talks about, their properties, and the connections between them.
Ontologies are expressed in terms of IAT/ML, and consist of a collection of elements plus relationships between them.
Details
An ontology describes the world at two different levels: types and instances.
Types refer to the categories, classes or universals that there are in the world.
Types are expressed in terms of categories, which correspond to universal entities, their properties, and the associations between them.
On the other hand, instances refer to the individual atoms, objects or particulars in the world.
Instances are expressed in terms of atoms, which correspond to particular entities, their values, and the links between them.
An ontology may contain an embedded context.
Types of ontologies
Ontologies can be:
-
Independent.
That is, you can create and work with an ontology stored in a file if you want to analyse a single text.
Ontology files have a .llo extension.
-
Dependent:
-
Stand-alone.
This is the case of an ontology for a document in a corpus.
These ontologies are stored as individual files in the corpus directory.
Do not rename or move these files, as the corpus keeps references to them.
-
Embedded.
This is the case of an ontology embedded in an ontology, an agency model, a corpus, or a corpus topic.
These ontologies are stored as part of the owner file (the ontology, agency model, or corpus database), so there is no risk that they are misplaced.
Working with ontologies
You work with ontologies depending on their type.
Independent
You can create an independent ontology by opening the backstage and clicking New, Ontology.
You can open an existing independent ontology by opening the backstage and clicking Open.
You can save an independent ontology by clicking the Save button on the Home ribbon tab, or via the Save and Save As commands in the backstage.
Of corpus documents
You can create an ontology for a corpus document by right-clicking the document and selecting Create Ontology... in the context menu.
Make sure that the corpus is open for read/write.
To open an existing corpus document ontology, right-click the document and select Edit Ontology in the context menu.
You can save the ontology by clicking the Save button on the Home ribbon tab, or via the Save and Save As commands in the backstage.
Embedded in an argumentation or agency model
You can create an ontology embedded in an argumentation or agency model by clicking the Create Ontology button in the Home ribbon tab of the owner window.
To open an existing embedded ontology, click the Edit Ontology button in the Home ribbon tab for the owner window.
Since this ontology is embedded in its owner argumentation or agency model, you don't need to save it.
It will be saved together when you save the owner model.
You can close the ontology and return to the owner model by clicking the Return to Owner button on the Home ribbon tab.
Embedded in a corpus
You can create an ontology embedded in a corpus by clicking the Create Ontology button in the Home ribbon tab of the corpus window.
To open the embedded ontology in a corpus, click the Edit Ontology button in the Home ribbon tab for the corpus window.
Since this ontology is embedded in its owner corpus, you don't need to save it.
It will be saved together when you save the owner corpus.
You can close the ontology and return to the owner corpus by clicking the Return to Owner button on the Home ribbon tab.
Embedded in a corpus topic
You can create an ontology embedded in a corpus topic by right-clicking the topic and clicking Create Ontology... in the context menu.
To open the embedded ontology in a topic, right-click the topic and then click Edit Ontology in the context menu.
Since this ontology is embedded in its owner corpus, you don't need to save it.
It will be saved together when you save the owner corpus.
You can close the ontology and return to the owner corpus by clicking the Return to Owner button on the Home ribbon tab.
