Add Denotations in an Ontology
Any concept in an ontology can be the target of a denotation.
A denotation expresses that a particular fragment of text content denotes a given concept.
There are two different ways in which you can add denotations in an ontology.
Follow these steps to add multiple denotations at once:
- Open LogosLink Desktop.
-
Open an ontology by clicking on the Open button in the Home ribbon tab.
Alternatively, open the backstage and click on Open to select or browse for an ontology.
LogosLink Desktop shows the ontology in a new window.
- Switch to the Insert ribbon tab.
-
Select the concept that you want to use for the denotations in the Elements pane on the left.
If no concept is selected, you can select it later.
-
Select the fragment of text in the Content pane that you would like to use for the denotation.
If no text is selected, you can enter the text later.
-
Click the New Denotations button.
The Add New Denotations dialog box shows.
-
At the top text box, enter the terms that you would like to use for the denotations, one per line.
If you had selected some text in the Content pane, the selected text will appear here by default.
You can modify the terms and add extra ones as you wish.
-
Click the
button to the right of the text box to find the entered terms in the text content.
A list of occurrences will be shown in the list below.
-
Revise the occurrences, making sure that the terms in all of them refer to the same concept.
Remove any occurrences that do not denote the right concept by clicking the
button to the right of the list.
-
Select the denoted concept from the list at the bottom.
If you had selected a concept in the Elements pane before, the selected concept will appear by default.
You can change it if you wish.
-
Click the Create button to create the denotations.
LogosLink Desktop will create denotations mapping the selected concept to each of the term occurrences in the list.
Alternatively, you can add denotations from a concept's property page.
Follow these steps to add a single denotation to a concept:
- Open LogosLink Desktop.
-
Open an ontology by clicking on the Open button in the Home ribbon tab.
Alternatively, open the backstage and click on Open to select or browse for an ontology.
LogosLink Desktop shows the ontology in a new window.
-
Open the property page for a concept.
You can do this by double-clicking a concept in the Elements pane on the left-hand side, or on a diagram.
-
Select the fragment of text in the Content pane that you would like to use for the denotation.
If no text is selected, you can enter it later.
- Find the Denotations area at the bottom of the property page.
-
Click the New Denotations button in the toolbar.
The Add New Denotation dialog box shows.
-
In the Content field, enter the term that you would like to use for the denotation.
If the text that you type occurs in multiple places in the text content, you will need to adjust its range manually.
If you had selected some text in the Content pane, the selected text will appear here by default.
-
Make sure that the selected concept appears in the Target field.
If not, select the right one.
-
Click the Create button to create the denotation.
LogosLink Desktop will create one denotation mapping the selected concept to the term that you entered.
