IAT/ML

IAT/ML is a methodology for the combined ontological, argumentation and agency analysis of discourses, with additional support for context analysis.

LogosLink is based on IAT/ML. For this reason, it is convenient that you get familiar with IAT/ML before you do any significant work with LogosLink.

This page provides a very brief overview of IAT/ML. For more information and supporting documentation, please see the IAT/ML web site .

Details

IAT/ML allows you to analyse discourses from three points of view: ontological, argumentation and agency:

  • Ontological analysis aims to produce a model of what the discourse is about (called an ontology), that is, the entities of the world that it refers to, and how these entities are related to each other. Ontologies are composed of ontology elements such as categories, atoms, properties and associations.
  • Argumentation analysis aims to produce a model of how the discourse justifies what it says (called an argumentation model), that is, what inferences, conflicts or rephrases exist, and what are the intention of the speakers when using them. Argumentation models are composed of argumentation model elements such as locutions, transitions, propositions, inferences and conflicts.
  • Agency analysis aims to produce a model of the beliefs, desires and intentions of the speakers (called an agency model), in the form of responses to a series of questions. Agency models are composed of agency model elements such as questions and responses.

In addition, context analysis aims to determine the context of the discourse in terms of the themes, positions and agents that are relevant to the three analyses above, and work as common grounds for all of them.
